To MilWordY or Not to MilWordY...

... that is the question.

With the new year coming up quick, I have to decide if I'm going to attempt MilWordY. I was planning on doing it from January through December 2024, but as the date approaches I think I am getting cold feet.

If you don't know what it is, it's a challenge where you write one million words in a year. It's like NaNoWriMo, but 12 times as long and 33000 words more per month... yikes. In the new year I'm planning on expanding my horizons a bit and writing things that aren't just fanfiction, which would help, since I definitely couldn't do a million words of just fanfiction... but it's still a lot. I set up a WriteTrack challenge for it and gave every Wednesday a weight of 0, basically to simulate missing one day per week. So I'd have to write about 3k a day.

I'll still be writing fanfiction, and doing this might actually help me get through the backlog of stuff I need to get done, but I also want to do some creative non-fiction (book reviews, video game stuff, etc) here on DW and maybe I'll even do some original fiction. It might be possible to do 3k a day with a variety, but as I am kind of in burn out land currently, I am a little hesitant about tackling this challenge.

What do you guys think? Should I try it?

At long last, here it is! The ultimate spreadsheet! Here are the kinds of numbers you can see with it:

Month, Year, and Lifetime Figures

  • total words written
  • total time spent writing (minutes and hours)
  • words drafted
  • time spent drafting (minutes and hours)
  • words edited
  • time spent editing (minutes and hours)
  • total words of fanfiction
  • total time spent on fanfiction (minutes and hours)
  • total words of original fiction
  • total time spent on original fiction (minutes and hours)
  • total words of non-fiction writing
  • total time spent on non fiction-writing (minutes and hours)

Session figures:

  • WPM calculated for each session recorded.

It's simple to use. Every time you record a writing session you only have 5 cells to fill in, and two only 3 of them are necessary. But it breaks things down a whole bunch!

Spacedog's Ultimate Yearly Writing Tracker Spreadsheet!

I spent so much time working on this sheet for myself that I decided to put it out as a resource for anyone else who wants to use it!

It has a built in tutorial. Once you copy the document into your own drive, you can modify it as you wish. If you have any questions or notice something is broken, leave a comment so I can get to fixing it!

So when I started writing I kept track of word counts and time spent in a little book because I like stats... except my math is off sometimes so later on I also made a spreadsheet to basically do the math for me. It's cool. My 2023 one shows me how many words I wrote each month, and how much time I spent, and also how much I wrote over the whole year and the total since I started writing. And you can see the difference between how many words were drafting words and how many were editing words...

But now 2024 is on the horizon and I'm... tweaking the spreadsheet. Now I want to see the following things in my monthly, yearly, and all time stat boxes: 1. total words written* 2. total time written in both minutes hours* 3. number of words drafted* 4. time spent drafting in minutes and hours 5. number of words edited* 6. time spent editing in both minutes and hours 7. total fanfiction wordcount 8. time spent writing fanfiction in minutes and hours 9. total original fiction wordcount 10. time spend writing original fiction on minutes and hours 11. total creative non-fiction wordcount 12. time spent writing creative non-fiction on minutes and hours

*Stats that are in my 2023 spreadsheet

Just overall a big ol' breakdown of stuff. I knew I wanted to show time editing vs drafting which isnt in my current sheet, but I also am thinking of doing some creative non-fiction (book reviews, episode analyses, etc) and maybe some original fiction (it's all been fanfic so far since I started) that I thought I'd think ahead and add those categories too.

I'm not very good at google sheets and this is a bit more complicated than the last one I made... so it's a learning experience. I'll probably make a blank template copy of it to share once it's done!
