Prompt #21: Creation and Destruction
Soran's jaw clenched as he stepped into his sister's recovery room. This clinic was a place he would only ever be a visitor to, and never a patient. He resented that, but more importantly, he resented that his twin had been admitted and he had not.
Vessa was propped up in her bed, awake and alert, and looking much better now that she had had a few days to recover from her surgery. She smiled at Soran when he entered, her eyes sparkling, oblivious of Soran's thinly veiled disdain for her.
"Soran," Vessa greeted him warmly, clearly happy to see him.
Taking a deep breath, Soran forced himself to be nice. "How are you today?" he asked, sitting down in the chair at her bedside.
She beamed. "Oh, I'm doing marvellous," she said, delighted. "I can't imagine ever going back to being just me. They're all so... entwined with me now."
Soran and Vessa were twin siblings, and until now, they had been alike in every way and had done everything together. They looked so similar that in their childhood they had occasionally swapped places to take exams in one another's place, and people thought they genuinely did have the fabled 'twin telepathy' that only ever happened in vids. Soran and Vessa were simultaneously exact copies and two halves of a whole. Until now.
Well, really, it had started months ago, when the siblings were undertaking the examinations to determine if they qualified as viable hosts for a potential symbionts. Passing the exam did not guarantee that the candidate would become a host, but they were added to a pool of potential hosts to be selected from whenever a symbiont was in need of another host. Vessa had passed the tests. Soran had not. That was where the rift had begun to form. It was when Vessa got the call that she was to be the new host of Nors that Soran and Vessa's relationship was permanently damaged.
Vessa was different now— she had entire lifetimes of experience that Soran didn't share with her. That they had spent their whole lives together, experiencing the same things, was what had made their relationship and understanding of each other so strong. Now, Soran couldn't even begin to hope that they would have that again.
"Soran," Vessa said, brow furrowing in concern. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Soran said, flashing her a smile. The she believed him all but confirmed that what they once had was lost.
A joining between a host and symbiont was supposed to be a beautiful thing—an act of creation. Adding a new life onto many, adding many lives onto one. Creating someone new.
But Soran now knew it wasn't all so perfect of a process. In that creation, that formation of a new person, something was lost. Vessa Taureel was lost in the creation of Vessa Nors. And with that loss, with the creation of Vessa Nors, the bond Soran had with his twin was forever destroyed.
