Day 12: "You're making my head hurt."

“What do you mean I translated this wrong?” Chekov asked, frustrated.

Uhura smiled sympathetically. “I told you it would be a hard language to learn,” she said, circling some words on Chekov’s PADD. “See, you’ve gotten mixed up with the gendered articles.”

Chekov groaned, disheartened. “I’ll never understand why words have genders, or why this one would have five of them.”

Uhura spent some time trying to explain the gendered articles to him again, but it was very difficult to for Chekov to keep track of it all when there were no words in Federation Standard for three of the genders.

“You’re making my head hurt,” Chekov groaned, face planting on the table in defeat.

Uhura smiled and shook her head. “Oh, Chekov. We haven’t even gotten to the tenses yet.”

“What about the tenses?” Chekov asked, voice muffled from having his face pressed into the table.

“There’s twelve of them.” Uhura said, then patted Chekov on the head as he let out a very, very long groan.

A minute and a half later, when Chekov finally ran out of breath and his suspended groan of agony was forced to end, he looked up at Uhura.

“I think I’ll pick a different language to learn.”
