A few of the senior staff were hanging about in one of the rec rooms one day after Alpha shift. Sulu and Chekov were playing a game of ping pong, with Uhura slated to play against the winner. Scotty was at a table with a cup of tea and a technical journal that he couldn't seem to take his eyes off, and Jim was in an armchair in the corner, reading.
The corner chair was a strategic location. Positioned in the corner as he was, nobody would be able to walk up behind him and snatch a glance at what he was reading. Normally, this wouldn't be so much of an issue, since Jim was usually found to be reading reports, or reading a chapter or two of an old Earth classic. But that wasn't what Jim was reading today, or in fact, had been for the past week. Instead, he was reading fanfiction.
A few weeks ago, he had stumbled upon a sixty year old show called Sun Walk, and was charmed by its story and characters. Two characters in particular— the bright optimistic leader Timothy Spark, and his best friend, the quiet and serious scientist, Korbon. He finished the whole show in two weeks, and couldn't get enough of it, which is how he stumbled upon troves of fanfiction about Sun Walk— notably ones where Timothy and Korbon were involved with each other.
It was there that he found the absolute filthiest smut imaginable. It was delightful.
So, as mentioned previously, the corner chair was chosen strategically. Because while Jim could read these fanfics with a straight face, it would do him no good if someone sneaked a look over his shoulder.
"Hello, Jim."
Despite himself, Jim jumped in his seat. He clicked off his PADD and set it aside, quickly recovering and smiling up at Spock. "Spock, I didn't see you come over," he said conversationally.
"It was not my intention to alarm you," Spock said apologetically. His eyes glanced over to Jim's PADD. "What were you reading that engrossed you so much that you didn't notice my approach?"
"Oh, that," Jim said. Outwardly, it sounded casual. Inwardly, he was panicking as he searched for an appropriate lie. Because there was no way he was admitting to Spock that he was reading Sun Walk smut.
"Oh, you know," Jim said, stalling. "Just really invested in Les Miserables," he said, grabbing the first classic that came to mind. Strangely, it was one he had never read before.
"I see," Spock said. "I was aware that you enjoyed the classics. How far have you gotten?"
Jim was confused as to why Spock seemed so interested in what he was doing, but pushed that confusion away to focus on making up another lie. "Uhh, I'm pretty close to the end," he said. "In fact, I think I'll have it finished by tonight." He wasn't sure why he added the last part. Probably to try and sell the lie a bit better.
Spock didn't seem to notice any deception. He just nodded. "I see," he said. "Well, as this book has captured your interest so thoroughly, I will let you get back to reading it."
Jim smiled. "Thanks, Spock. Good chatting with you."
He sighed with relief once Spock left the rec room. His secret was still safe. He picked up the PADD and continued to read his chosen fanfic.
The next morning on the way to the bridge for Alpha shift, Jim and Spock ran into each other on the turbo-lift.
"Morning, Spock," Jim yawned. He hadn't gotten much sleep last night. He must have told himself 'one more chapter' at least ten times.
"Hello, Jim," Spock said. "I was curious, so I read Les Miserables last night. I found it quite an intriguing read. I would like to discuss it with you. Have you managed to finish it?"
Jim's heart stopped in his chest for a long moment. "Uh, no," he said quickly. "I had some paperwork I had to catch up on and I didn't have time for the last few chapters," he lied.
"I see," Spock said. He seemed oddly disappointed, which made Jim panic.
"But I'll finish it tonight for sure," he blurted. "And then we can talk about it tomorrow."
Spock seemed to brighten at this. "I look forward to it," he said.
The turbo-lift opened and Spock walked out onto the bridge. Jim sighed in relief. Then the anxiety hit him. He had never read Les Miserables. Therefore, to have a discussion with Spock about it tomorrow, he would need to read it. In one night. It was fourteen hundred pages long. He gulped.
That night after Alpha shift, Jim went straight to his quarters. Usually, he would do his reading in the rec room, but he needed to buckle down and concentrate if he wanted to finish Les Miserables in one night. The stakes were high. If he didn't finish the book, Spock would be disappointed in him. And possibly worse, his lie might be exposed as just that— a lie. And then Spock would ask what he had really been reading. Jim shuddered at the idea of Spock finding out about the smutty Sun Walk fanfiction he had been reading. And now that Jim was thinking about smutty Sun Walk fanfiction, he was desperate to read the next chapter of his current read. Unfortunately, he had to read Les Miserables instead.
With a pot of coffee ready to go, Jim queued up the book on his PADD and began to read at a quick pace.
When his alarm went off, signalling for him to wake up for Alpha shift, Jim was still awake, still reading the tome of a book. His reading speed had decreased as the hours wore by, and by the time his alarm went off, his vision was swimming and he was having a hard time reading the words on the page. Even worse, he was still two hundred pages out from finishing the book.
He groaned, got up, synthesized some caffeine pills, and changed into a fresh uniform before heading to the bridge.
The caffeine pills helped keep him alert throughout the morning, but it was obvious that he was somewhat impaired. Bones had stopped by the bridge and saw the awful dark bags under Jim's eyes, and his slurred way of speaking, and took him off duty for the rest of the day to get some sleep.
Jim did not sleep. He had a book to finish.
He took more caffeine pills, drank some coffee, and with his heart beating out of his chest from all the stimulants, he read the rest of the book. When he finished it, there was still an hour left before Alpha shift ended and Spock would come to discuss the book with him, so Jim took advantage of that hour and slept.
When he woke up, it was to his morning alarm. He panicked, realizing that he slept through his meeting with Spock. He rushed to the bridge to find Spock and apologize.
"Spock!" He exclaimed as he stepped out of the turbo-lift. "I am so sorry about yesterday, I fell asleep and I was out so hard I didn't hear the door chime—"
Spock cut him off with a raised hand. "It is quite alright, Jim," he said. "After you were sent back to your quarters to rest, I decided that it would be best to have our discussion another day. If you are feeling well today, perhaps we could meet after Alpha shift?"
Jim relaxed. "Yeah," he said. "yeah, that would be great."
They met in the rec room, sitting across from each other in two armchairs with a small table in between, where they stacked their PADDs on top of one another to make room for their mugs of tea. They spent an evening having an in depth discussion about the book. Jim retained a surprising amount of it despite having read most of the book in one sitting while sleep deprived.
When they went back to their separate quarters, Jim sighed a breath of relief. His ruse had been successfully performed. And, he actually rather enjoyed talking to Spock about the book. Perhaps they should start a book club. So long as he didn't have to read a fourteen hundred paged book in one night ever again.
Jim sat down at his terminal. He had some paperwork to get through that he was supposed to have done the day before, and it was time to catch up on it. And once that was done, he could finally read that next chapter of the Sun Walk fanfiction.
It took an hour and a half to finish the paperwork, and he was tired. But he promised himself one chapter, so one chapter he would read. He picked up his PADD and turned the screen on. His heart dropped. This was not his PADD.
He recalled the way that he and Spock had stacked their PADDs atop each other on the tiny table earlier. The PADDs looked identical, so they must have gotten them mixed up. So if Jim had Spock's PADD, then Spock had Jim's PADD... which was loaded with Les Miserables and a ton of Sun Walk smut fic.
"Shit!" Jim said, and ran out of his quarters, hustled the short way down the hall to Spock's door, and hit the buzzer, resisting the urge to press it multiple times.
Maybe it was fine, Jim thought to himself to try and calm down. Maybe Spock hadn't even opened the PADD. But when the door opened and Jim walked in, he saw Spock sitting at a table with a cup of tea and a PADD in hand. Jim felt certain that the PADD was his.
"Good evening, Jim," Spock said.
"Uh, hey," Jim said, holding up Spock's PADD. "I think we got our PADDs switched up."
"I have noticed," Spock said, gesturing to the PADD he held. Jim felt like dying. "You have some rather interesting literature on your PADD," Spock said casually. "I wasn't aware that you were a fan of Sun Walk. It is a nearly sixty year old franchise, after all."
Jim blinked in surprise. "You know Sun Walk?"
"My mother showed it to me when I was a child," he said.
"Huh," Jim said. He wasn't sure how to address the whole smutty fanfiction thing, but it was cool that Spock had seen Sun Walk.
Spock went on. "Forgive me for the intrusion," he said, again pointing to Jim's PADD. "But I saw the titles and was too curious not to open them."
"Yeah?" Jim asked.
"Certainly," Spock said. "I have found them quite interesting. You know, Jim, in many ways, Timothy and Korbon's relationship reminds me of our own."
Jim flushed, trying to parse what Spock was saying. Had Spock read the same fanfics he had? Did he know what he was insinuating? "Yeah?" He asked. "Like, in the show, right?"
Spock nodded. "Indeed," he said. "Though some of the characterizations in these fanfictions fit even better."
Oh. Jim thought he was about to have a heart attack.
The corner of Spock's mouth twitched. Oh, that son of a bitch, he was enjoying this!
That realization made Jim feel less like dying and more like getting some revenge. "Oh?" he said coyly. "Well, maybe you'd like to reenact some of those scenes, hmm?"
It was Spock's turn to blush, a green hue touching his ears. "Perhaps I would," he said.
"Well," Jim said. "Say no more."
